About the Nursing Home Ministry

Why do we exist?

To bring the Eucharist and prayerful companionship to the Catholic residents of Hearthstone Skilled Nursing Center and Trinity Lutheran Nursing Home. Our vision is that Catholic residents of the Nursing Homes in Round Rock would continue to feel God’s presence through St. William Nursing Home Ministry.
Services include

  • Sunday morning communion visits
  • Midweek communion and prayer services
  • On-site masses (by a priest)
  • Anointing of the sick (by a priest)

Read some testimonials from our volunteers and residents.

What do we do?

Sunday Communion Visits:  Volunteer Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion pick up the Eucharist at Saint William visit approximately 10 to 25 residents at  the assigned Nursing Home. Volunteers typically serve one weekend a month and can be paired with another volunteer to split up the list of residents to be visited. Depending on the volunteer’s time constraints and the number of residents, visits to the Nursing Home can last from 1 to 2 hours.
An individual visit usually includes prayer, scripture, social visiting and concludes with Holy Communion.

Midweek Communion Visits & Prayer Services:  At Hearthstone, a group of volunteers meet at the Nursing Home to gather residents to say the Rosary and distribute Holy Communion on Wednesday  mornings. At Trinity, a group of volunteers conduct individual communion visits on Thursday mornings.

Saturday morning Rosary & Divine Mercy Chaplet:  A group of volunteers meet at the Trinity Nursing Home to gather residents to say the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 9:45 AM in the chapel.  You do not need to be an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist to participate or lead this group.

On-Site Masses:  When a priest is available, masses are conducted at both nursing homes instead of Sunday communion visits. A group of volunteers help set up the room for the mass, gather volunteers, help with music and readings. Masses are held several times a year.

Anointing of the Sick:  A volunteer takes a retired priest once a month to administer this sacrament to the residents.

Families with small children can volunteer together.  The residents really enjoy seeing young people.

Volunteer Training

All volunteers must attend the “Protecting God’s Children” workshop which is held frequently throughout the Austin Diocese. Volunteers do not need to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EME) to Volunteer but it is extremely helpful if they are. Those who wish to become an EME should contact Debbie George. Training sessions are typically held 3 to 4 times per year. New volunteers accompany experienced volunteers a few times until they are comfortable doing in the ministry.

Nursing Home Schedule for Sunday Volunteers

Weekend volunteers pick up communion and conduct individual visits with the residents.  The schedule is flexible and can be coordinated if visiting with another volunteer.  Mornings are highly preferred since the residents tend to be more alert at that time.  7:30 am and 9:30 am mass attendees normally pickup communion during the mass and then go to the nursing homes.  Volunteers who normally attend other mass times can make arrangements to pick up communion before or between masses.  View the weekend volunteer schedule.
