Bishop John E. McCarthy Dies at 88

It is with great sadness that we announce Bishop John E. McCarthy, third bishop of Austin, died Aug. 18 at his home, surrounded by his family. Funeral arrangements are as follows: 

  • Thursday, Aug. 23, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Public viewing, St. Mary Cathedral, 203 E. 10th St., Austin
  • Thursday, Aug. 23, 7 p.m.: Vigil, St. William Parish, 620 Round Rock West Dr., Round Rock,  Bishop Joe Vásquez officiating.
  • Friday, Aug. 24, 2 p.m.: Mass of Christian Burial, St. William Parish, 620 Round Rock West Dr., Round Rock; presider, Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza; homilist, Msgr. Elmer Holtman.

The family respectfully recommends donations to the Bishop John McCarthy Memorial Fund, 6225 Hwy 290 East, Austin, TX 78723.

Let us give thanks to God for the priest and Bishop that he was to so many people, here in Austin, Galveston-Houston and throughout the country and world. Please keep his family in your prayers.

Join us for this adult-only, laid-back night to sip, savor and support our church at the Harvest Moon Gala on Thursday, October 4. The third annual gala will feature multiple stations of alcohol and hor d’oeuvres pairings featuring local businesses, a silent auction, a live auction, fun music and much more! This year is extra special as we will be celebrating Father Dean’s 30th year in the priesthood! Please help us honor him by attending or donating $30!
